Black Friday and Cyber Monday: Smart Shopping Tips for Your Budget

Black Friday and Cyber Monday budgeting tips for smarter holiday shopping with MEFCU.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday can be great opportunities to save on holiday gifts and larger purchases you have already been planning. They can also make it easy to spend more than expected.

Limited-time offers, countdown clocks, free shipping minimums, and “one-day-only” prices can create pressure to buy quickly. A deal may look good in the moment, but it is only a good deal if the purchase fits your budget.

Before the holiday shopping rush begins, take a little time to decide what you actually need, how much you can comfortably spend, and how you plan to pay.

At Members Exchange Federal Credit Union (MEFCU), we encourage members to approach holiday shopping with a plan that works for their finances long after the sales are over.

Set Your Black Friday Budget Before You Start Shopping

One of the easiest ways to overspend during Black Friday weekend is to start shopping without a number in mind.

Before browsing sales, decide how much money you can realistically put toward holiday shopping. That amount should fit within your regular budget without taking away from important bills or other financial priorities.

Then, break that total into categories such as:

  • Holiday gifts
  • Clothing
  • Electronics
  • Travel
  • Decorations
  • Food and entertaining
  • Personal purchases

You do not need a complicated spreadsheet. Even a simple list with an estimated amount beside each category can give you something to refer back to when a sale catches your attention.

If you are shopping for several people, assigning a spending limit to each person can also help keep your total under control.

Make a List Before the Sales Begin

Black Friday and Cyber Monday advertising often starts well before Thanksgiving.

Use that time to make a list of the items you actually intend to purchase.

A shopping list gives you a way to separate planned purchases from things you only noticed because they were advertised at a discount.

Before adding an unplanned item to your cart, ask yourself:

  • Was I already planning to buy this?
  • Is this replacing something on my list?
  • Would I still want it if it were not on sale?
  • Does buying it keep me within my holiday budget?

Sometimes the best way to save money during a sale is simply not to buy something you did not need in the first place.

Compare the Final Price, Not Just the Discount

A large percentage-off sign does not always tell the full story.

Take a moment to compare prices between retailers and look at the actual amount you will pay. Shipping costs, delivery fees, warranties, required memberships, and other charges can change whether one offer is really better than another.

It can also help to look at prices before Black Friday arrives. That gives you a better idea of whether a sale price is actually lower than what the item normally costs.

For online purchases, review your cart before checking out. Several small impulse purchases can quickly turn an order that seemed affordable into one that pushes you over budget.

Decide How You Will Pay

Before shopping, think about whether you plan to use your debit card, credit card, or another payment method.

Using a debit card can make it easier to see purchases come directly from your checking account. If you plan to shop with your MEFCU debit card, regularly reviewing your checking account balance can help you keep track of how much you have available.

A credit card may also be useful for purchases when used within a planned budget. The important part is knowing how much you are charging and having a plan for repayment.

Whichever method you choose, avoid treating an available credit limit or account balance as your shopping budget. Your spending limit should be based on what you can comfortably afford.

Add Your MEFCU Card to Your Digital Wallet Before You Shop

If you prefer paying with your phone or another compatible device, you can add an MEFCU debit or credit card to a digital wallet.

MEFCU cards can be used with major digital wallets, including Apple Pay™, Google Pay™, and Samsung Pay™. Digital wallets allow your payment information to be stored securely on a compatible device so you can make purchases without pulling out your physical card.

Setting this up before Black Friday or Cyber Monday can make checkout more convenient, especially when shopping at retailers that accept contactless or digital wallet payments.

Even when using a digital wallet, the same budgeting rules still apply. A faster checkout should not mean faster spending. Keep your shopping list and budget in mind before tapping to pay.

Keep an Eye on Your Accounts While You Shop

Holiday shopping can mean more transactions than usual, especially over Black Friday weekend.

That makes it a good time to pay closer attention to your account activity.

Through MEFCU Digital Banking, members can review transactions, check balances, manage debit and credit cards, and set up account alerts.

Checking your account throughout the weekend can help you see how much you have already spent and catch unfamiliar transactions sooner.

It can also help prevent a common holiday-shopping problem: forgetting about purchases made at several different stores and realizing later that the total was much higher than expected.

Be Careful With Black Friday and Cyber Monday Scams

Holiday shoppers are not the only ones paying attention to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Scammers may also take advantage of the increase in online shopping.

Be cautious with unexpected emails, text messages, social media advertisements, and offers that seem unusually good.

Before clicking a link, make sure you know who sent it. When possible, visit a retailer’s website directly instead of following a link from an unexpected message.

You should also be cautious if someone asks you to provide account information, card details, passwords, or other sensitive information.

For additional tips, review MEFCU’s Identity Theft and Fraud Protection resources.

Do Not Let Free Shipping Change Your Budget

We have all seen it: you are $10 or $20 away from free shipping, so you add another item to your cart.

Sometimes that makes sense. Other times, you end up spending $25 to avoid an $8 shipping charge.

Before adding something extra, compare the cost. Paying a small shipping fee may actually save you money if the alternative is buying something you did not need.

The same rule applies to promotions that require you to spend a certain amount before receiving a discount or reward.

Spend based on your list and your budget, not on the amount a retailer wants you to reach.

Leave Room for the Rest of the Holiday Season

Black Friday weekend happens near the beginning of the holiday shopping season, not the end.

You may still have gifts to purchase, gatherings to attend, meals to prepare, travel expenses, charitable giving, school activities, and other seasonal costs throughout December.

Try not to use your entire holiday budget during one weekend just because the sales are happening now.

Leaving some room in your budget can make the rest of the season easier to manage and give you flexibility when an unexpected expense comes up.

Shop the Sales Without Losing Sight of Your Budget

Black Friday and Cyber Monday can help you save money on purchases you already planned to make. The key is knowing what you want to buy before the sales begin and keeping your total spending in sight as you go.

Set your budget, make a list, compare actual prices, and choose a payment method that works for your financial situation. If you use an MEFCU debit or credit card, adding it to your digital wallet can also give you another convenient way to pay while you shop.
